Have you ever walked down the path along the Jones Falls River? Have you spotted an owl, blue heron, or fox in the woods in Woodberry? Does your child play at the Rockrose Playground? What do all of these areas have in common?

All of these areas are beautiful open spaces that give Woodberry its charm, and most are unprotected from development.

You read right - even the Rockrose playground isn't classified as a park. As many long term residents may tell you, the old playground behind Malden ave was sold and a warehouse was built there. The residents of Woodberry enjoy their open space and are concerned about this, so they formed a group called the Woodberry Land Trust.

A land trust is a non-profit group that buys land or accepts easements with the goal of preserving the land as open space. The Woodberry Land Trust will co-hold land in Woodberry with the Maryland Environmental Trust, a state wide group. Property owners in the area who have land that isn't built on can place their land in an easement. The owner still owns the land, but the land can't be developed after this happens. In return, the property owner can receive various tax credits.

The Woodberry Land Trust is incorporated and is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit. Please e-mail the trust with any questions, or to get involved in this worthwhile project.
